As someone whose mother always made her bring a valentine for every child in the class, how can I choose just one book from among my recent reads? Instead, I’ll recommend David Naimon’s Between the Covers podcast and a whole library. David interviews authors working in every genre representing cultures from around the world. He researches so thoroughly, delves so deep—many interviews run to two hours or more—that I glean almost as much from David’s questions as the authors’ answers. And if you’re someone who more readily digests the written word, within weeks of broadcast transcripts are available on the Tin House Between the Covers website where you can also access past episodes, an archive that includes more than a few Canadians. There may be no better recommendation than Omar El Akkad’s words at the close of his interview with Naimon: “I’ve done so many of these things and this might be the first time I’ve listened to somebody walk through who I am and not fuck it up 10 different ways.” Enjoy!
