I’m naturally drawn to songs with a strong melody and beat that keeps me bobbing through the entire track. G.E.M.’s Mandarin pop song “透明Selfless” is one I always come back to. Narrating about the difficulty in situating oneself in a relationship and the result of this reality, G.E.M’s self-composed lyrics and melody drives deep into my heart. When I first heard the song, the unrelenting piano opening, accompanied with the rhythmic backdrop lulled me into its arms. The verse and chorus of “透明Selfless” consists of both rap and melody, which leads to a heightened wailing-like juxtaposition at the bridge. Relationships aren’t easy. Navigating through them without losing yourself is a journey, and this song reminds me of just that.
