Since I returned to Canada two years ago and secured a library card, I’ve been voraciously reading all the books I can get my hands on, like memoir and my favourite fiction genre, science fiction and fantasy. Here are my favourite SFF books that I’ve read over the last few months: 

Nicole Chatelain lives with her husband and two children in Ottawa, where she teaches in the Professional Writing program at Algonquin College. She is finishing her undergraduate English degree with Athabasca University. She’s writing her first book Head Over Feet: The Lasting Heartache of First Loves. Megan lives and works on the territory of the Tla’amin Nation on the coast of British Columbia. Andrea Bishop’s work has been published or is forthcoming in Grain, Orca Literary, Exile’s CVC Anthology Series, and elsewhere. Jenny Ferguson (she/her) is Michif and white, an activist, a feminist, an auntie, and an accomplice with a PhD. She believes writing, teaching and beading are political acts. THE SUMMER OF BITTER AND SWEET, her debut YA novel, was published by Heartdrum/HarperCollins in Summer 2022. She teaches at Loyola Marymount University. Jenny's essay "Floods and Other Disasters" was published in the Summer 2022 creative nonfiction issue of The Fiddlehead.  

Anca L. Szilágyi is the author of Daughters of the Air, which Shelf Awareness called “a striking debut from a writer to watch.” Her second novel, Dreams under Glass, releases in Fall 2022. Her story "Boiled Boot" was published in the Spring 2022 issue of The Fiddlehead. Originally from Brooklyn, she has lived in Montreal, Seattle, and now Chicago. ancawrites.com.

Ed Taylor is the author of the novel Theo, the poetry collection Idiogest, and 3 chapbooks. His prose and poetry appear in a variety of U.S. and U.K. periodicals, and his occasional work in other media includes the 2020 1-act play “Black Nikes." His essay "Combover" was published in the Summer Creative Nonfiction issue of The Fiddlehead. His Instagram is @toothlessmurgatroyd.  

Kawai Shen is a writer based in Toronto. Her story "Minimalism" will be featured in an upcoming issue of The Fiddlehead. 

Elizabeth Haynes’s writing has appeared in magazines and anthologies, most recently You Look Good for your Age (U of A Press). Her story collection, Speak Mandarin Not Dialect (Thistledown Press) was an Alberta Book Award finalist.
