Judith Pond's Music Recommendation:
When I’m writing—my husband’s study is next door to mine—I need to put on my headset and get far away. Once the headset’s on, he knows not to disturb me.
One of my favorite composers for ‘getting away’ is Daniel Elder, who shapes a cappella choral singing in ways that both melt and elevate me, and that take me to starry places. The quiet reach and tranquility of his Three Nocturnes, for example, seems to steady out my brain so that it’s not so terrified of the page. The turbulent, and in many ways shallow times we’re living through seem distant from the attitude of praise. Elder’s generous and devout use of the human voice can help us remember it.
