Stop! Look! Listen! Helena Olufsen's Listening Recommendation

I learned of Lucky Lo’s album, Supercarry, by happy coincidence.

Needing a weeknight drink, I went to a friend’s café in Odense, Denmark, only to find the café already stuffed with guests–young and old, plain and flamboyant–hunched around the tables, a buzz of anticipation in the air.

My friend explained that the café was about to host the LP release party of a local singer-songwriter, Lucky Lo. No problem. It being a party, I figured there’d be lots of dancing, clinking bottles, and lively chatter. Instead, when the music began, the crowd sat motionless and breathless, hypnotised by the rhythm and Lucky Lo’s deep, womanly voice, as the record player spun track after track from the vinyl. We listened through the whole album in a meditative silence, and I forgot all about drinks or dancing.

Since then, Lucky Lo’s album, Supercarry, has accompanied me through the seasons. It’s become a sort of tour of Funen, my new home. If the title track, Supercarry, is a jog through the bustling townscape of the north, then Heart Rhythm Synchronise is a slow drive through the flossy rollercoaster fields of the south.

My favourite track, Fruits in the Ocean, is a shingle beach in the evening, dressed in orange sunlight and sapphic awakenings. The whole song feels like Scandinavian summer breathed into notes: a little warm, a little drowsy, a little mystic. Mellow with keys and distorted plucks on the electric guitar. In the chorus, the liquid trill of Lucky Lo’s voice is punctuated by what sounds like the sighs of swooning mermaids – a combination nothing short of fabulous.
