Stop! Look! Listen! Mary Dean Lee's Listening Recommendation

I recently discovered a unique album called “I am in Need of Music: Songs on Poems by Elizabeth Bishop.” The Silken Water Suite with music composed by Alasdair MacLean and featuring soprano Suzie LeBlanc is arresting and beautiful. The four parts are: I. The silken water is weaving and weaving; II. Dear, my compass; III. Close, close all night; IV. Breakfast song.

Mary Dean Lee’s poetry has appeared or is forthcoming in Best Canadian Poetry 2021, Event, Salvation South, Ploughshares, I-70 Review, Burningword Literary Journal, Dunes Review, Sepia Quarterly, as well as other journals. Her first book, Tidal, will be published by Pine Row Press in May 2024. She grew up in Milledgeville, Georgia, studied theatre and literature at Duke University and Eckerd College, and received her PhD in organizational behavior at Yale before moving to Montreal to teach at McGill University.
