Three books of reference are my secret sauce: Jerome Irving Rodale’s The Synonym Finder, 1978; from the Editors of Reader’s Digest, Reader’s Digest Illustrated Reverse Dictionary: Find the Words at the Tip of Your Tongue, 1990; and Theodore M. Bernstein’s Bernstein’s Reverse Dictionary, 2nd Edition, 1988. All are available at online used book sites.
For sheer musical delight, I turn to the joyful word-play of Atsuro Riley’s Romey’s Order.
Kevin Young’s The Art of Losing came into my life at just the right time and is the one gift I can confidently press into friends’ hands at moments of illness or bereavement.
The Everyman’s Library Pocket Poets Series has produced 43 books and counting. My current favourite is Art and Artists Poems, edited by Emily Fragos. If you’d like to dip your toe into poetry written in response to art, this volume spans Western and Eastern verse from 850 B.C.E. to present.
Catherine Seton has worked as an English teacher and librarian. As a patient advocate, she collaborated with people living with pain to create verbatim theatre. Her writing has appeared in Arc Poetry Magazine, CV2, The Windsor Review, and on CBC Radio. Born in Chatham, Ontario, she resides in Toronto.
