Darren Bifford's Reading Recommendations

Eric Hobsbawm's The Age of Revolution is a classic study of the French and Industrial revolutions, and their subsequent impact. I've also been rereading Nietzsche's earlier works and Walter Kaufmann's study on his thought. I'm going through the Greek Tragedies, especially Euripides, as well as David Ferry's translation of Horace's Odes. I'm also finishing Stephen Spender's memoir, World Within World, which I picked up for a dollar and which gives us a vivid sense of the preoccupations and experiences of those British poets who came of age in the 1930s. Finally I've read Matt Rader's awesome recent book of poems, Desecrations.

Darren Bifford is originally from Summerland, BC. His work has been published in a variety of journals across Canada. He’s also the author of Wolf Hunter, a chapbook published by Cactus Press (2010). Wedding in Fire Country is his first collection of poetry. Darren currently lives in Montreal, Quebec.

Hi Darren -- So much for your light summer reading -- where is the heavy stuff? By the way, many years ago when Stephen Spender read in Montreal I got an old copy of World Within World signed--it's even more yellowed and brittle-paged now than it was then, so I might end up saving only the title page.
