Emily Hockaday's Reading Recommendation:

During these uncertain times, I turn to fiction that totally engulfs me—escapism on steroids. As a science fiction editor, I come across a lot of fantastic worlds and wildly imaginative people and societies. I usually work with short fiction, so in my downtime I read novels. The most recent book I finished was Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko. Raybearer is a YA fantasy that was an absolute stunner. I couldn’t put it down. I found I couldn’t read it at night to relax, because instead I would stay up for hours reading! The story follows Tarisai as she struggles to reconcile who she is at her core, her powers, and the curse her mother put on her. The world of Raybearer is fully fleshed—each realm has its own flavor and culture, and all of the characters are well rounded, three dimensional people. I can’t recommend it enough—and I can’t wait for the sequel! Up next on my nightstand is The Lesson by Cadwell Turnbull, and it’s already turning out to be as much of a page-turner as this one….
