The satirical stories of Leo Simpson's collection The Lady and the Travelling Salesman are the major attraction of the book, and they are also its limitation.
Richard B. Wright's Farthing's Fortunes may not be a grand novel in absolute terms (if such exists), but it's a "great read"--a rollicking, exuberant picaresque novel chock-full of Canadian cultural experience, and, as such, is a certain candidate for the next Governer-General's Award.
